Trip to Waipukurau

Trip to Waipukurau

This post is a bit late, that is because I have been processing some of the information from this trip into my website. I will get to that later in this post.

On the morning of September 19th I woke up at 4:30am to start my travels to Waipukurau for my Aunt Sally’s 80th Birthday.  The trip took 5 and a half hours and was free flowing and in good weather and I arrived around 10am.  I had a couple of things that I wanted to accomplish over this trip apart from celebrating my Aunt’s birthday.  Mainly to do with family research, was to get some information on the wall clock that Aunt Sally had, which is a family heirloom, and to visit the cemetery to see the headstones of my Great grandparents, Ron and Kay Cameron, and their youngest daughter Margaret Anne who died at the age of 17 in 1961.

The main celebration was a lunch held at the Dax bar, one of the two locations that we could have gone to in Waipukurau.  Having Auckland being in level 2.5, limiting groups to 10 people, but the rest of the country in level 2, the expectation is for Aucklanders when travelling to stick to the limits of the Auckland region.  I thought that there would have been some physical distancing at the restaurant that we went to, however that did not appear to be the case.  It was a bit tricky to keep to the requirements.

The weather that afternoon was not too good, and we went back to my Aunts house.  Although not apparent straight away, I found that she lived in the flat in front of where her parents lived in, Ron and Kay Cameron.  They moved out of that flat when my Great grandfather (Ron) died in 1991.

Sunday’s weather was pretty good, and we went to the cemetery to see the graves of Ron and Kay, and their youngest daughter Margaret (known as Anne).

We had to get back to the house by 10:30 am as I had to take part in a Clan Cameron Executive meeting.  Due to Covid 19, this was changed to be done through Zoom. Otherwise this would have been held at Taupo.

After lunch was the trip back to Auckland.  I enjoyed the trip and it had been a while since I had seen my Aunt, and it was good to see the rest of the family especially after the latest lockdowns.

Cheese and whiskey after lunch.  This bottle of Ardbeg Blaaack was delivered to my father, when I purchased it on Queens birthday weekend this year.

This is the wall clock that had been mentioned in a few documents with in the family, I have documented it by taking photos of the clock as well as a letter written by Corrie who had documented her memories of where it came from and who owned it previously

Waipukurau Cemetery

These photos were taken for my own records, I had known that they were at the Waipukurau cemetery however I had not been back to Waipukurau for many years.  I have also updated this website if you are interested in looking at the raw information.
